What we're all about at Winterwood

The St. Onge family ancestors arrived in New England aboard the Mayflower in 1620. In 1644 they moved to and settled what is now Dayton and Lyman Maine. The family has been working the land in Southern Maine ever since and continues to do so today. Winterwood Farm® compost products reflect our heritage of preserving the land and insuring the future of agriculture for generations to come. Our facility is a diversified farm, producing farm and agricultural products. Like our ancestors, we cleared the land and worked it part time until 1990 when we made the leap to full time farming. Our ultimate goal has always been to make a living from the land in a sustainable and environmentally sound manner. Today we are doing just that.

We offer a variety of goods and services:

The Compost
Since 1997, Winterwood Farm has been a licensed agricultural composting facility. We are now bagging our premium compost products exclusively under the Winterwood Farm® trademarked brand name, offering an eye catching line of bagged products. In some areas we offer a bulk (Cu. Yd.) sales program .

We accept only clean organic feedstock at our facility. Winterwood Farm® Premium Shellfish Compost & Garden Soil products are made from organics from the ocean, farm & food industry. Winterwood Farm® Compost is approved for organic growing. Winterwood Farm products do not, and will not ever contain any bio-solids, sewage or municipal waste. We do not collect or compost any pesticide or herbicide contaminated leaf & yard waste.

Our commitment to quality and safety is recognized by many Maine business and regulatory agencies. Winterwood Farm has been the recipient of the Maine Governors Waste Reduction Award, Maine Composter of the year and SBDC Award for innovative agricultural entrepreneurial spirit & dedication. Winterwood Farm is recognized as the largest agricultural composter of organics in the state.

The excellent quality or our premium product is proven. You cannot buy a better compost for your garden. We are committed to continuing to adhere to the highest standards of our industry. Winterwood Farm® products are not sold in big box stores or by national chains. We are founded on good service, quality control, safety, and honest business integrity.

The Beef and Pork
We raise and show Registered Belted Galloway beef cattle. Our award winning Registered Belted Galloways produce a lean meat that is low in both total fat and saturated fats. Our "Belties" are fed an all natural diet. We do not use growth hormones or general antibiotics. Our quality freezer beef is sold by the side. We also raise hogs including Hampshires for freezer pork.

MOFGA certified Organic Vegetables
In 2003 we became a M.O.F.G.A. Certified Organic Grower.  As the compost business grew and required more of our attention, the organic vegetable garden drew the shortest straw and was put on a back burner for the time being. In the future we hope to sell organic vegetables through a market share program.

The Dingos

We're starting a small pack of Australian Cattle Dogs a.k.a. "Queensland Heelers".  From left to right: Dig, Maverick, Daisey and Lacey.  The middle two are known as "red heelers" and the outer two are known as "blue heelers"  If you see a Winterwood Farm truck, chances are one of these four are in-cab security, and wow can they be protective, they work great with the cattle and sometimes, when necessary, the pigs.
The breed was fully recognized by the AKC in 1980.
The standard breed is a cross of Australian wild dingo, Blue Highland Collie, Dalmation and Black & Tan Kelpie.
