How compost is made at Winterwood Farm. |

| Materials are unloaded on our "receiving pad" which is a large concrete surface, this keeps the product pure. Compost made on the dirt tends to contain dirt! |
Crab, Shrimp, and Lobster shells, and sometimes whole fish are all part of the mix for our Shellfish Compost. | |

| Food Scraps and used paper goods from local restaurants are all part of the mix for our Eco-Blend Compost. Restaurants separate these organics from the rest of their waste and They are picked up and delivered to Winterwood Farm. |
Horse manure, Cow manure, and the sawdust used for bedding the animals is hauled to Winterwood. |
|

| These materials are blended in a large mixing wagon with horse and cow manures combined with sawdust bedding picked up at farms all over the state of Maine |
| The mix is then transported in the wagon to a "curing pad" which is a large asphalt surface, again keeping out any sand, silt, or gravel contamination. |
|
 | A front end loader piles the compost mix into long piles called windrows. Compost is turned when piles reach temperatures of 140-150 degrees. |
| When the piles begin to cool the compost is screened to remove particles bigger than 1/2"
|
|
 | Finished compost is moved into a large barn for storage. |
Compost is put in 40 pound bags and stacked onto pallets
